Did you know there is only one bird that doesn’t have wings?
It is the Kiwi (scientific name Apteryx mantelli). This small animal lives in Oceania and
can not fly because it lacks wings. Unlike the vast majority of birds which have hollow
bones to save weight and make flight more practical, kiwis have bones which contain
marrow similar to those of mammals.
Kiwis are shy and nocturnal, they have a very developed sense of smell, a kind of
moustache around their beaks and nostrils at the tip of their beaks which help them
forage for food (worms, insects, coconuts, etc).
Another curiosity of this animal is that the male is the one who hatches the eggs (it is
the largest egg in comparison to the proportions of the adult animal). Furthermore,
Kiwi nests are subterranean, similar to burrows and none of the parents are dedicated
to feeding the young. Chicks when sufficiently developed leave the nest to feed on
their own.
